This Could Be It: Selected Tracks 1995-2020 - A 25-Year Retrospective

Fucking hell. 2020. Not a year many people will forget – especially me; and for more reasons than that bloody virus.

I had been doing a lot of thinking and reflecting during lockdown and realised that 2020 marks 25 years since I wrote my first song on my first keyboard with absolutely no musical knowledge or training whatsoever. This song, The Colours of Green, still exists in an editable format to this day having been exported to midi from OctaMed before regrettably ditching the Amiga around 2004ish. It has been remastered and remixed this year in Logic. It was while I was working it that I thought it would be a good idea to compile a best of retrospective for legacy purposes.

My electronic music obsession started around 1985 after hearing the Streethawk theme tune by Tangerine Dream but I guess my music production journey started in 1990, at the age of 15. I had been given a copy of Soundtracker for the Commodore Amiga and subsequently bought an 8bit sampler to use with it. My first attempts into music production consisted of sampling loops of rave tracks and trying to make my own remixes. They were shite but I enjoyed the process and the learning curve.

25 years later: £10,000s worth of equipment and software, 19 albums, 300 songs, 15 remixes and 3 Tangerine Dream cover versions – as well as having a family and full-time job. I’d like to say that my hobby / obsession has kept me out of trouble, but I can’t.

As 2020 draws to a close and the future remains uncertain, so does my confidence to continue writing music. So, this could be it, but I sincerely hope not.
